Binge or Cringe: The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family, Not too Typical, Neither Too Ground-Breaking!
The Kay Kay Menon and Barun Sobti-starrer is currently streaming on ALTBalaji. What do we think about it? Watch the video to know more.
Standing true to its name, the Great Indian Dysfunctional Family, is a family drama that boasts of secrets, which would never tumble out. The story revolves around the North-Indian Ranaut family (No, not Kangana Ranaut) from Kanoori. Former Army-man Vikram Ranaut (Kay Kay Menon) is the big brother of the family. He’s a man of high temper, armed with a gun in his hand. He’s leading a peaceful life with his druggie mother, wife and kids. But, all hell breaks loose when his younger brother, Samar (Barun Sobti) and his wife Sonali, return after a span of eight long years. Their return brings about secrets from the past, and now the real twist is will the broken Ranaut family be able to stay united again?
Speaking of the star cast, we all know the powerhouse performer that Kay Kay Menon is and he does great justice as the chauvinist, homophobic , egoistic army man. Shriswara who essays the role of his wife named Geeta is effective in her portrayal of the long-suffering wife. Barun Sobti, a popular face on the small screen prudently uses his TV expertise and churns out an honest performance as the younger brother, Samar. But, it is Eisha Chopra, yet again, in a fiery, outspoken role, as Samar’s wife who stirs the hornet’s nest and sets the ball in motion. The matriarch of the Ranaut family, Premlata, (a drug addict) played by Swaroop Sampat is there just to provide some comic relief.
We thought this would turn out to be a typical K serial eventually, but the good news is, post a few hiccups in the middle, the makers manage to revive the track. The melodrama, slo-mo shots and overbearing background score, are sidelined over the course of time.
To sum it up, The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family isn’t a ground-breaking show, but it does enough to keep you engaged with the life of the Ranauts.
Our verdict Bingeworthy!
